So 6 Weeks on, the beginner groups continues getting stronger as the weeks pass by.

Since my last write up, we have been out and achieved what some of us though was not achievable. But let me go first to week 5 just in case you weren’t there!

Week 5 saw us meeting at 9:30 in the Courthouse again, despite the freezing (and I seriously mean it) freezing fog!! To say it was cold it was an understatement. Still, a big group, around 25 I think with some new faces, made it that morning! Idea was to do around 60 kms, some inclines/hills (whatever you want to call them really) and maybe a bit of speed work! So, off to Youghal we go. We lost one of our road captains and Trish who was suffering badly with a cold/asthma and forgot her inhaler. Both returned back to Midleton before we reach Killeagh. Fog seemed to have lifted a bit after that, beautiful sun, a bit of heat (still freezing, don’t get me wrong!) ….and the Youghal bypass greeted us….off we go…I start cursing not having had breakfast that morning (DO NOT DO THAT AGAIN!) …but I keep pedalling, people pass me, but I keep going, I know the drill at this stage, drop to the small ring, and breath!!!! Everyone up the top waiting to regroup, and continue the journey after a little breather (and a bit of chocolate courtesy of Garry McGuinnes)….Off we go passing the roundabout, a bit of climbing but nothing serious…spectacular views, we got up to Kinsalebeg petrol station, where we stopped (Mags though we were having a coffee break, he!) our picture was taken , and we quickly turned back!!!!! Back to Youghal, where I was at the top for a while (not long before a hill where I drop to the back again!) and this time we stopped for coffee…only to be received by instant!!! Oh dear, we are not being very successful with our coffee breaks!! Anyway, there was another garage not far, so the group was split between the likes of “I don’t care what coffee I get as long as it gets me warm” and those who “need the real thing”! After the break, it was decided that the group was big enough to maybe split into two groups, so one group could go a bit faster! Here, I made the decision to try and keep up with the faster lads thinking, sure we are all “beginners”, and it’s almost “flat” all the way back, what harm can it do? Well, it went very fast, it was obvious that the group was breaking very quickly but I tried to hung there at the fast group…there was a fast changing chain , so they were taking turns going up to the top and lead, but I was not able for it….and first big hill, I was dropped!!! Now, I shouted at the guys to hold for me, I was sure I would be able to keep up, but they couldn’t hear me. Unfortunately we were far from the other group, so I had to ride back on my own. I want let you all know all that went through my head, but it wasn’t nice….Anyhow, I kept going, thinking, ok, just get home, just get home, but it was hard, I there and then realised the advantages of riding within a group, not only physically but also mentally…it’s so much easy!! Passed Killeagh, and debated to wait for the group behind me, but there was too far, and I didn’t want to get cold (fog hadn’t lifted there and again it was freezing), so I kept going….I won’t lie, I was hurt, hurt that I was not able to keep up, and also hurt that no one in the front group realised I was missing and waited for me!! But, Mags to the rescue (not only she does break coffee machines, but she also fixes things!!) she caught up with me before I reached Castlemartyr, and we rode back together…cursing this and that, fixing this and the other….and we reached Midleton!!! We were determined this was not going to break us, and glad it didn’t!!

So, when week 6 came, and we found out we were doing the Earthquake route, and all the climbs involved, some of us beginners had a bit of a chat via Facebook messages, and were afraid, very afraid of the task ahead, but determined to raise our voices (I don’t have to make a huge effort on that, you all know I am loud by now!) if the group was going too fast for us!! Lloyd was our Road Captain, along with Shane, Fergus and Dave O’Brien. I made sure I positioned myself to the front to make sure we were not too fast..but sure, I forgot my garmin, so I had no idea what speed we were doing…but it felt good, and in fairness to Lloyd, he keep looking back, making sure “I” was ok, and that everyone else was still with us. Small stop before we reached the Youghal bypass, we were reminded to use the gears for the climb, just to take easy, forget about anyone else, and just go!!!...when we reached the bottom of the bypass, someone had a mechanical…his chain broke!!It went all too fast, first we were all stopping, then we were told to go ahead…some lads stayed behind and fix it (we need a class on these things guys!) …and off we all went….some went fast, some went slow, but we all made it to the top.

(I was told Mags fell trying to stop when she got there, she got cleats during the week…I feel it’s important to know those things…I will be getting out with mine next week..and I’ll report back on one of my falls too..hehehe) . After a quick sip of water, a few jellies…off downhill we were…I am starting to like the descents after those climbs….apart from a stoopid car beeping at us at some stage, it was fun speeding a bit!! Little did I know what was to greet us after the roundabout…..a hell full of climbs…..but I was mentally prepared for it….I knew I was going to be slow, that I might be on my own for a while…..and off we went….it wasn’t as bad as I expected…J* (can’t disclosed his full name, sorry) joined us in Youghal, and he stayed with me during the climbs to Tallow….he kept telling me all about the hills ahead, how many how long..and I told him to lie to me, I would rather not know!!! Well, when I asked him to tell me the truth, he wouldn’t …go figure!!! Anyway, here I was puffing up the hill, when his phone rang…and he answered it…I couldn’t hardly breath and here this man goes cycling up hill talking on the phone!!!!! Fair play!!! ….As the group was spread up the hills…we regrouped a bit before getting to Tallow, a quick banana and some drink, and off we went again. There was some nice descents on the way….I loved every minute of it!!!

We arrived in Tallow, and we found a shop for coffee….panic when Mags was there at the top of the queue….and just before she gets there, the machine runs out of water….seriously!! Some people have gone to another shop, lucky ducks!!!! Anyway, the lovely ladies in the shop refill the water and we all happy enough to have got a hot drink!!! After everyone has had their little coffee and a bit of a banter, we are told there is yet a few more hills, and to Dungourney, bad road surface, but then it’s all downhill…do you believe them? I didn’t and right I didn’t!!! It was hilly, I wouldn’t call that a road, and surface was worse than bad…but we made it..I feel I have to mentioned here St. Fergus , Garry the Great, Mick the Merciless and Dave the Determined , as they all stay with some of us to make sure we were ok at all times…..Adrian kept going up and down, making sure we were not stopping, Shane was taking selfies on the road..even a video where you can check my lovely cork accent!!! And we made it to Dungorney, where we had one last stop, shared any left over jellies, food, drink , and as it was “mostly” down hill, we decided we were not going to regroup again..Some tough hills after Dungorney, but, I don’t know what’s up with me, they didn’t bother me as much, and I didn’t die on any of them….mmmm, do I like them, hell no!! But I am getting used to them!! Gary stayed with me, and Fergus with Trish, Deirdre and Mags were flying at the front…..Chats are great on those spins, we are all getting to know each other, and lots of friendships are being made…I have proposed a beginners graduation celebration of some sort!! So let’s bounce some ideas next week and see what everyone would like to do. Not sure what will happened after our 8 (or is it 10) weeks beginners group stint finish, maybe an intermediate group???. But what I know it’s that I am glad I made the decision to join the group, and that despite the ups and downs, I am still here week after week, with such great people and being encourage by everyone when I most struggle!! Let keep up the good work!!

Another Busy Week for Midleton CTC.

This week ,my strava feeds gone nuts with the obscene amount of miles being done by our outstanding members.

Lots and lots of miles being done with a lot of long solo efforts with too many to mention.

Thursday saw the Whitegate wheelers section of the club off out around the back roads of Ballymacoda, Garyvoe etc.

As usual Franky “Froome “ Cashman ,Paudie Murphy ,Aiden Berry and John Sharkey lead the charge with David Coughlan and Tosh hiding at the back as well as taking a short cut home! Tosh is blaming the Man flu but David has no excuse!!! Both Fined 3 penalty points!!!

Friday was a very busy day for our members, Have ye no work to be doing?????

Tosh tried to redeem himself by taking a handy 66km spin with Barry Mcmahon, While John Sharky continued to rack up big miles this week with a solo 77km.

Jonny Finn used one of his rare days off to go and attempt to steal Peter Moloney’s thunder by trying to steal his kom’s on “Piano-Pete's Pesky Peaks!” and he did achieve a nice KOM on Young-grove climb of 5:24.

Shane Fuller Continued his race season prep with a very swift 50km tour of Cobh with a 30km average, a great solo speed considering the hills in Cobh. Anyone saying i’m bitter about him stealing my 2015 Kom’s is purely speculating !!!!

Saturday again saw a lot of riders on the roads in groups.

Tony Fitzgerald, Derry Cadogan and John Lynch did the Nico Spin 100km route in a very nice 4hrs.

While Paudie and Franky Froome got dragged around the place by Martin Cashman on a handy 80+ spin. Strava shows Martin did another 20km on his own so I’m not sure did he head home to get the car to pick up the lads after too man scones??

Saturday is also the Juveniles spin day and as usual a great day of training was had. As usual Club Chairman Ken Savage was there to help as well as Jonny Finn, Paul O' Brien and Michael Broderick Kept the group safe as ever in the back up car with Coach Tim Mahony riding shot gun.

Aidan Crowley from club sponsors Velo Revolution came down to pass on some of his valuable knowledge and took them for some Sprint training with the spin being 55km+.

Slightly off topic but during his recovery Tim is available to paint dado rails if anyone needs him according to Ken!!

Rachel Drennan kindly sent me an update on the day:

We are all training hard and everyone is getting stronger each week. On Saturday Aidan "The Dude" Crowley kindly helped out along with Ken and Johnny and offered his expertise while putting us through some painful sprints and interval training. Also, we're all looking forward to the racing season which will begin at the start of April for the juveniles.

Sunday

Sunday as we know is the main club spin as well as the now well established Beginners spin, Although the tag “beginners” may well be dropped soon.

Again a huge turn out for the beginners spin. Some of the race lads Lloyd Weymouth and Shane Fuller both went along as well as Garry Mcguiness, Dave O Brien and Fergus Blackmore all helping as road captains.

The group did the earthquake spin, as we all know not an easy spin with plenty of sapping climbs. Impressively the Average speeds of what ended up being two groups was maintained from previous weeks even with the big climbs added in. Catalina has sent me a very in depth report and its easy to see the passion for the sport she has gained by how much she wrote. Because the report is so in depth I will post it soon in its own right.

The Main club spin as usual had a great turn out with us heading north to twelve balls and on through Glenvile to Whitechurch for the now Customary Gucci selfie!

Some Good climbing done by the time we reached Whitchurch didn’t stop Jonny Waterman springing the suggestion we do Patricks hill again. My Prayer was answered though when Leonard got a puncture so a rest was got in the legs for a small few before we reached Patricks Hill. Leonard even Took the precaution of saving energy by letting Jonny Change his tyre for him!?! Cunning!

Special shout out to Derry Cadogan who apparently realised he dropped a contact lense at the bottom so went back down and came back up for a second time while the main group waited for the ‘rescue team”. (Derry doesn't even wear contacts?)

Again big shouts to Derry , John Lynch and Leonard O Sullivan who all did big mileage the day before as well.

I am sad to report Penalty points this week have been issued though!

Andrew Whittaker who walked up Patricks hill bike on back in order to save himself for the final sprint, 3 points and dissqualified from the sprint!

And Jonny “Theres no sprinting going on! wooossssshhhh” Waterman for using plain Skulduggery to win the sprint home, 3 Penalty points.

Heres the the Strava leader board this week Well done To John Sharkey, Donagh Mc Carthy and Derry Cadogan again .

The round up this week and last has been all cycling but as a triathlon club we have also had a good range of activities with Many Members getting some good running and Swimming done.

Russell Palmer got a few very rapid runs in this week as well as Jonny Finn and Colum Foley also getting some time in the runners.

The ever impressive Gary Neff had a great week with multiple runs transitioning onto the bike with some big mileage and impressive times.

Swimming has been a focus of the club over the last 6 weeks with the first Set of coaching sessions coming to and end tonight.

6 of us have attended the Fota Island Resort for the last 6 weeks under the fantastic coaching of Swimming Ireland Coach Marc Sanquest.

I must say at the start of the 6 weeks I couldn't even swim 18 meters without fear of drowning and am really thinking a triathlon is achievable after some great teaching from Marc. The Coaching sessions are going to continue and there may be spots available if others are interested in joining, Please contact Jonny Finn if you are.

Big Thanks to Marc and the Fota Island resort.

Thats it for this week see you on the Road.

Richie

Another frosty week but another week of solid winter miles put in by the Midleton CTC Members, with a very busy weekend.

The Juveniles Set out on Saturday for a 50KM spin via Castlemartyr, Shanagarry, East ferry With Ken Savage, Dave McCarhty and Jonny Finn leading the group on the Road while the recovering Tim Mahony followed to keep a careful coaching eye on the group from the Team car with the ever present Michael Broderick. Even in these Winter months the Juveniles are really getting in the miles and it will be a promising season for them.

Saturday saw a group of Tony Fitzgerald, Derry Cadogan and Barry Mcmahon take a trip up the Vee, never an easy spin. As a just reward they did treat themself to a Jam and cream scone in Lismore on the way home.

The beginners group contiues to go to from strength to strength with the group completing a 65km spin at an average pace of over 25kmph. This group is really progressing well now and a the group are also getting in some very impressive mid week km's as well. Well done all. A quick report here from Alan Harty:

We headed to the sunny south east 60 odd km and lucky for us the fog cleared for some beautiful blue skies. Great bunch of people and some really strong riders. Future is bright for MTC. We were all getting on great until Mags made the call to have the coffee stop back in Youghal!!! In my own defence it was Colums call. Your know these kerry men. Will travel miles to save a few cent. Just waiting on the other photos. Gary wants to check them to make sure I got his good side!!! Big thank you to Colum , Gary, Fergus and Andrew for helping out this morning.

The Regular Sunday coffee Spin did a very chilly spin to Dungarvan with around 107kms on the clock with 800m of climbing. A special shoutout to Derry Cadogan who did some extra on his own to take his days spin over 150km's with over 1171m of climbing and also to Barry Mcmahon who both did the previous days spin up the vee.

It has been noted that Calum Lynch may indeed believe himself to be Mark Cavendish, and it was noted he tucked himself nicely at the back all day and made a bid for a sprint at the finish only to be caught in traffic. Front of the group for the first 60km next week now Calum!!!

Sunday was also the Donal Crowley Memorial Sportif in Blarney. Well known for its very high pace and it didn't disapoint. A small group from Midleton CTC headed down and put in a strong showing Leonard O'sullivan, myself, Lloyd Weymouth, Shane Fuller, Will Rock, Shane Fuller and Daithi Reilly all started off together with Lloyd weymouth, Shane Fuller, Will Rock, Shane Fuller and Daithi Reilly Pushing it home in the front group with average speeds over 31.5kmph on a really hilly course. This event is a good judge for the season and was used by a lot of racers to judge their form. Judging on the performance of Lloyd, Shane and Will this will be a great season and I think Daithi might be roped in to racing after that impressive performance. We won't mention what happened to me but if you watch the GCN top 10 excuses video there's at least 4 of those apply!

Over to this weeks Strava Leader board.

And some great performances.

This week with the Lanzarote Trip fast approaching a secret commitee has begun to issue penalty points for suspect behaviour. Any body attending the Lanzorote trip who reaches 10 penalty points by the time they have checked in will face approriate punishment.

The first of these penalty points this week go to James Roche and Dave Power.

Aka "the gucci's" Who both this week receive 3 penalty points each for "marginal behaviour".

Grown men in lycra taking pictures of each other simultaneously is way too much mutual admiration.

This is just strange lads!

Have a good week on the road.
